Milk and cheese are excellent sources of calcium, as well as protein for muscle and other joint supporting tissues. In order to get the most benefit from calcium intake, your foods should also include vitamin D. Vitamin D must be present in order for calcium to be absorbed. Shrimp is another excellent source of vitamin D with 3 ounces containing more calcium that a cup of milk and also contain iron and vitamin B 12. Essential fatty acids, or EFAs, are divided into 2 groups - omega-3 and omega-6. It is believed that omega-3 EFAs have significant anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce the symptoms of auto-immune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. One of the best sources of omega-3 EFAs is in fish oil that comes from the fat of the fish. The fish highest in omega-3 EFAs are salmon, cod, mackerel, tuna and herring. Salmon also contains calcium, vitamin D and folate. When making choices of the foods you eat, remember to include several fruits and vegetables and use proper portioning of your meals.
